3 Things to do in Custer State Park, South Dakota

Updated: Sep 1, 2023

Nestled in the picturesque landscapes of South Dakota lies a natural gem that offers an unforgettable adventure for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers: Custer State Park. On a father-and-son US roadtrip, the US Travel Dad did the Dakota's, Devils Tower in Wyoming, and now we were ready for South Dakota, starting with Custer State Park.

The name 'State Park' is a bit strange; this park has every right to be a full blown National Park. It has everything and more. It is expansive park, spread across 71,000 acres, a haven for diverse flora and fauna. There is an abundance of wildlife, including the unique opportunity to witness the majestic American Buffalo from up close, it has granite formations, and beautiful lakes. It is tough to make a selection, but let me share with you the top 3 things to do in Custer State Park, South Dakota:

1. Driving the Needles Highway

Let me be clear about this one: driving the Needles Highway is a must-do when in South Dakota. The Needles Highway is a spectacular 14-mile drive through pine and spruce forests, meadows surrounded by birch and aspen, and the larger part of the road is surrounded by towering granite formations, carved by the wind and erosion into 'needles'.

Be prepared for hairpins and several super narrow tunnels that offer just enough inches on each side of your mirrors to get through without scratches. As you navigate this exhilarating route, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including dense forests and rugged terrain that showcase the raw beauty of Custer State Park in the Black Hills. Make also sure you make a stop at beautiful Sylvan Lake.

2. Scenic Hiking Trails

Custer State Park offers an array of hiking trails that cater to all levels of adventurers. Two trails to highlight that we hiked. The 7.1 miles Black Elk Peak Loop. The views are amazing, and in the right season, you will have a lot of color from the wildflowers. The stretch to the peak is the hardest, You climb many rocky paths and if it's busy you need to allow people to go around. Count on 3.5 hours to do the full loop. The second trail is a nice and short one. I recommend it when you make a stop from your drive through Needles Highway. It is the 1.1 mile easy Sylvan Lake Shore Trail. It offers beautiful views of the lake and the rock formations.

3. Buffalo Jams on the Wildlife Loop Road

For those who prefer a leisurely exploration, the park offers several scenic drives, the most famous being the Wildlife Loop Road. This 18-mile loop takes you through some of the most prime buffalo viewing areas in the park. My son and I set the alarm for 5.30am in the morning and were underway by 6am. The drive is - again - amazing. Especially in the early sunlight.

First we saw several donkeys, deer, elk, and a bighorn sheep. After 30 minutes we spotted the first Buffalo, followed by a big herd of about 40. Ensure that you are not in a hurry, because it was at least 30 minutes before we were able to slowly move again, and eventually continue on our roadtrip. This is Custer State Park. Again, it should be a National one.

Tips for your roadtrip to Custer State Park

Rising at Dawn in Custer State Park South Dakota

While you probably have your sights on Mount Rushmore and the Badlands (as I did), visiting Custer State Park is a must-do, and to be honest, the most spectacular experience of our Dakota's US roadtrip. It is an escape into the heart of nature, with buffalo encounters at dawn standing as a remarkable highlight. To make the most of your trip, let me share a few practical tips:

Want so see Buffalo? Arrive Early: To witness the buffalo at dawn, ensure you are in your car and on the Wildlife Loop Road before sunrise. This is the time of day when the Buffalo herds are most active, so you maximize your chances of seeing them, which is important, as it is not a guarantee you will view these animals on your trip. As a bonus, the light is amazing early morning.

Respect Wildlife and Rules: While the buffalo might appear calm, remember they are wild animals. Maintain a safe distance and follow park guidelines to ensure your safety and the animals' well-being. I have read a few too many stories about people feeling the need to start walking out their cars and in the herds, several of them leaving the scene in an ambulance.

Check for Park Updates: Before your visit, check the park's official website for any alerts, trail closures, or changes in operating hours.

In essence, Custer State Park offers an unparalleled opportunity to immerse yourself in nature's grandeur and witness the iconic buffalo at dawn. The experiences you gather here will stay etched in your memory, a testament to the untamed beauty of the American wilderness.
