Welcome to the vibrant and iconic Ocean Drive in Miami's South Beach! The US Travel Dad left his family at home, and explored this great destination with two old friends. Thinking back of our youth in the 80's, when we watched every episode of Miami Vice, to see Riccardo Tubs and Sonny Crocket drive around.
This sun-soaked stretch of Florida paradise has a lot to offer every traveler. Whether you want history, a puzzling nightlife, art and art deco architecture, a foodie heaven, or beachside relaxation, you will find it here on Ocean Drive. Let me share my top 4 of things to do:
1. A Walk through Ocean Drive History:
Ocean Drive has a fascinating past that adds to its unique charm. Starting as a dirt road along the beach, the boulevard evolved into a resort town for the rich in the 1920s. Art Deco's heyday's in the 1930s transformed Ocean Drive to an amazing showcase of this style. The next 20 years, Miami South Beach evolved into mass tourism. America's playground. A magnet for people and their money. In the 80's and 90s, Miami Beach fell out of favor, cocaine flooded the streets, crime flourished, and serious plans were underway to demolish all art-deco. "Miami Beach is where neon goes to die" was a known phrase. Versace bought a mansion, and was murdered on Ocean Drive in 1997. And then the turnaround in the 2000s. Art Deco renovations, tourism returning, Gloria Estefan opening her hotel and restaurant, Ocean Drive is cool again.
Bring your camera and walk along Ocean Drive during daytime to catch the most complete art-deco showcase you've ever seen, and again during night time, so you can see all neon-lights. Want to go back to the 'bad' days for one evening? Re-watch the 1983 movie 'Scarface'.
2. Art Deco Delights:
If you have a penchant for art and design, you're in for a treat on Ocean Drive. The Art Deco Historic District, which includes Ocean Drive, is a treasure trove of architectural wonders. Many of the buildings have been lovingly restored, maintaining their original splendor. As you explore the area, you'll be transported back in time, feeling the retro vibes that make Miami South Beach so famous. Make sure you make stops at the Colony Hotel (especially at night), the Cardozo South Beach Hotel, the Essex House Hotel, Avalon Hotel, and the house of the late Gianni Versace; The Villa - Casa Casuarina
3. Foodie Heaven Miami South Beach:
Food lovers, prepare to indulge in a culinary journey like no other! Ocean Drive and its neighboring streets boast an array of eateries, catering to every taste and budget. Dive into the flavors of Cuba with a scrumptious Cuban sandwich or savor the freshness of seafood with the popular stone-crab dishes. For a touch of sophistication, dine at one of the chic rooftop bars that offer stunning views of the ocean and the city. And don't leave without treating yourself to the tangy goodness of the classic Key Lime pie – it's a slice of heaven. Three restaurant tips: A Fish Called Avalon, Havana 1957, and Mango’s Tropical Café
4. Beach Bliss:
No visit to Ocean Drive is complete without enjoying the beautiful South Beach. With its soft sands and azure waters, it's a haven for beach bums and water lovers alike. Stretch out on a beach towel, bask in the glorious Florida sun, and take refreshing dips in the Atlantic waves. If you're feeling adventurous, consider renting a jet ski for some high-speed excitement or challenge your friends to a game of beach volleyball. The beach scene here is electric and full of life – just what you need to unwind and soak up the good vibes. Don't forget to take a couple of pictures of the iconic beach lifeguard houses.
Getting Around:
Navigating Ocean Drive and its surroundings is super easy. The area is incredibly pedestrian-
friendly, making it a pleasure to stroll around and explore at your leisure. To cover more ground, we rented a bike. There is also the Miami Beach's bike-sharing program. And if you're feeling extra adventurous, hop on a scooter and zip through the streets with the wind in your hair. For destinations a bit farther away, rideshare services like Uber are of course also available.
Conclusion:
Ocean Drive in Miami South Beach is a kaleidoscope of history, art deco, foodie heaven, and beachside bliss. It effortlessly blends the past with the present, offering a unique and laid-back experience for every traveler. Explore the captivating Art Deco architecture, savor the diverse culinary delights, unwind on the beautiful South Beach, and get around with ease on foot, bike, or scooter.
